Acknowledgement
It gives us immense pleasure to share this JPMA-Journal of Pakistan Medical Association’s special supplement with our readers, published as an appurtenance to the 5th AKU Annual Surgical Conference of the Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan. The theme of the conference is ‘Trauma,’ and submissions were invited keeping this theme in mind. We are grateful for the enormous response from both national and international contributors and a total of 77 manuscripts were received. We adopted JPMA’s strict criteria for publication and each submission was first evaluated for plagiarism through specialized computer software. No manuscript was rejected at this level.
Editorial
Trauma and injury may be one of the most neglected of health issues globally. It is considered to be the second leading cause of demise before the age of 40, following only cardiovascular disease1. The current estimated toll for deaths secondary to injury exceeds the cumulative mortalities from those of HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis2. Yet, despite this ‘universal’ burden upon the healthcare infrastructure, sadly, trauma lacks the supportive developmental assistance and funding currently allotted to high-profile conditions, as mentioned above3.
